Capitalism Kills

A running, sourced tally of the dead.

Computed live from published figures. Of this total, are documented historical deaths (colonial famines, slavery, wars); the rest accrues from present-day hunger and healthcare deaths since 1990. Every figure below cites its source.

For comparison

The number most often raised as capitalism's moral counterweight is the death toll attributed to communism. Here it is — sourced and caveated the same way everything else on this page is.

How this number is built

Each entry is counted once (historical events) or ticks forward in real time (ongoing structural deaths). Figures are the conservative end of each cited range. Every number here comes from one open file — view the raw, sourced data — and the full reasoning is on the methodology page.

Documented, but deliberately not counted

These are claims we considered and left out — because the number is discredited, the attribution to capitalism is too weak, or counting it would be indefensible. Transparency about what we exclude is what makes the rest credible.
